can anyone recommend a basic u.k. savings a/c which will enable me to set up a direct debit and also receive money from abroad by bank transfer.

You cannot have a savings account with the facility of a DD, open a current account (Nationwide's Flexaccount is good) and open up a savings account at the same time and set up a Standing Order to the savings account and use the current account for Direct Debits. Most accounts do not have an inhibit on receiving payments in so, you could use either accounts for this

Most savings accounts do not permit direct debits. You need a current account for that. And bear in mind that laws on money-laundering are so tight now, that any bank will want to know how and why you are receiving this cash from abroad.|||PayPal|||It's probably gonna cost you a fee, but go to a big Building Society and they are pretty goo at that... I live overseas, and they arranged changing currency through an intermediary, and deposit of money into my bank in the US. I imagine they can handle your situation, too.
