Ok what kind of UNIX do you need to learn bsd? try freebsd.org, there are two main type of unix used out there, system V and bsd unix. freebsd is the best open source bsd linux out there, if not the best. Now for free system V base unix, I don't know of any open source. You should understand that linux is a cloan of unix. Ther are more features avalaible on linux than unix. I started learning linux, red hat first, then slackware, then bsd linux. My school runs solaris on some of their terminals, just from the experience I learned from linux, am a pro working with solaris. Also I think Sun is realeasing an open source OS http://www.opensolaris.org/os/ I believe that is pure UNIX, open source UNIX base of system V. So if all you want is unix and nothing more, try freebsd or opensolaris. But I recommend you also give linux a try. hope this helped

You can also post your questions here:|||Well linux is VERY close to unix. BSD may be a little closer if that is possible. They are both considered as derivatives of UNIX.

RJ|||How about FreeBSD? Its lineage is true BSD UNIX kernel, same family line that Mac OS X is based on.|||Get a copy of AT&T UWin. It it great and should do everything you need in UNIX withing the Windows wnvironment. You can even get X-Window support to build your own X programs.
